Brief description of Current Primary Focus:

As the director of TBI, I conduct research into the history and theory of Mabel Todd’s educational system, preserve and organize archival items, and create educational materials and services to support the future development of the field.

Education and Certifications:

Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Washington
Master of Arts in Dance, University of Illinois
Registered Somatic Movement Educator

Learning Experiences Related to Mabel Todd’s Educational Legacy:

In the 1970s and 1980s, I was privileged to study with Barbara Clark (a protégé of Mabel Todd) and her students Joanne Emmons and André Bernard.  Bernard’s method for sharing Clark’s work with groups of students served as my model for conducting “ideokinesis” classes in the Department of Dance at Arizona State University.   In the course of developing the websites, www.ideokinesis.com and https://thinkingbody.org, several other scholars and teachers augmented my understanding of the field.

After retiring from ASU, I developed an approach to somatic movement education called Mindful Movement®, to preserve and refine Barbara Clark’s lessons in  “mind-body integration.”  Mindful Movement® also makes use of information and techniques from other forms of somatics, to deepen the student’s psycho-physical understanding of Clark’s educational goals.

Professional activities, publications, areas of research and/or personal inquiry related to the goals of TBI :

Expanding the resources and activities of the Thinking Body Institute is my current primary focus. We are continuing to collect and organize historical materials for preservation in the TBI Archive. The effort to produce high-quality reprints of Todd’s original publications as TBI Media Special Editions is another area of focus; Todd’s 1953 text, The Hidden You, was recently added to that collection.  I have also just completed the revised edition of A Kinesthetic Legacy: The Life and Works of Barbara Clark. Both of these new texts are described in detail in the TBI Catalog.

Projects and interest areas for Exchange:

The teachers and scholars who have applied to explore Todd’s approach as Archive Subscribers are pursuing fascinating work!  Now that TBI has assembled approximately 80 subscribers, it is time for all of us to begin learning more about each other’s projects and interests. Please use the form we have provided to describe your activities.

I look forward to assisting your efforts to broaden Exchange in our community. Please contact me if you have any questions.
