An Introduction to the Practice of Topf Technique® and Dynamic Anatomy

by Nancy Topf, with Barbara Clark, Marsha Paludan, Jen Harmon and Melinda Buckwalter (Editor)

The Anatomy of Center by Nancy Topf

This Contact Quarterly Chapbook features an excerpt from Nancy Topf’s 200-plus page manuscript, The Anatomy of Center and explores the dynamics of her teaching.  The text includes two articles written by Melinda Buckwalter, which provide context for the manuscript, as well as brief reflections on the development of Topf’s approach written by her teacher, a colleague and a student.  Topf’s vivid crayon sketches are integrated into the text; additional illustrations include anatomical drawings and photographs.

About the Author
Nancy Topf (1942–98) explored Dalcroze Eurhythmics as a child, studied Martha Graham technique as a teen and completed a dance degree under Margaret H’Doubler at the University of Wisconsin.  Upon graduation, she trained and performed with many modern dance pioneers in New York City.  In the postmodern era, Topf collaborated with John Rolland, Marsha Paludan and Mary Fulkerson in the development of Anatomical Release Technique.   Subsequently, she created her own unique teaching method called, “Topf Technique® and Dynamic Anatomy.”  She presented her approach in many professional and academic venues in New York and internationally.
